Kurt failed to identify all members of the DMU either before, or during, his first interview. A result of Kurt’s oversight, communication within the customer organization was inaccurate and created a power struggle between the three parties responsible for making the purchase decision. Kurt’s failure to engage and analyze the true DMU resulted in his reliance on secondary information gleaned from interaction with secretaries (gatekeepers) – which likely was neither accurate, nor trustworthy and his own assumptions. This was evidenced in his records, when he left meetings believing he had made a positive impact on the DMU, without any clear evidence of positive persuasion. The Prescription Phase Kurt failed to identify the latent needs of the customer, the DMU’s true motivations, or the benefits in buying a CT scanner from Mediquip beyond those offered by its competitors. This lapse led to a failure in identifying the features, advantages and benefits of the Mediquip scanner with respect to each DMU member’s needs during the prescription phase of the sale, and ultimately resulted in conflicts within the buying unit. Kurt was responsible for communicating with three members of the DMU – the professor (initiator end user), the physicist (influencer end user), and the hospital administrator (buyer) – with whom he was deficient in identifying the specific goals of each member. As a result, Kurt offered multiple price reductions in an attempt to satisfy the administrator’s needs, but failed to identify the administrator’s latent need to feel like he was getting the best deal. By offering multiple price reductions he devalued the technical superiority of his product and made the administrator feel as though he may be getting swindled. Kurt should have identified the administrator’s concern for pricing and need to feel as though he was getting the best value for his dollar. He should have identified the benefits of Mediquip, in an apples- to- apples comparison to its competitors, showing the long term cost savings associated with the purchase through ease of upgrades and increased processing speed. Once all beneficial characteristics of the Mediquip CT were identified, only then offered the best price possible. Finally, during the prescription phase, Kurt would have benefited had he met with all members of the DMU. Because he overlooked the need to identify each DMU member’s concerns, he failed to bring them together to facilitate a consensus of Mediquip’s advantages. Kurt could have served as a mediator helping to solve political conflicts within the DMU and thereby creating additional value for his customers. Closing the Sale At the point where Kurt could have invoked open dialogue between the three DMU members, he would have availed himself of the SPIN technique. He could have identified the situation – a need for a new CT scanner. He could have asked open-ended questions, engaging the DMU, and simultaneously identified their concerns and needs. He was unsuccessful in building up the value side of the cost equation, as it related to each member of the DMU, and continually chose to focus on cost reduction strategies rather than emphasizing the value of Mediquip’s CT machine. The events in the book prove that there is a huge Juxtaposition between Electra and Clytemnestras views about the roles of woman in society. There is a parallel when it comes to the killings of Iphigenia, Agamemnon and Clytemnestra. Each person believed that what they were doing was acceptable to do in each of their situations. When Agamemnon sacrificed his daughters life he did it because he believed that that was his only option to make peace with Artemis so that he could help his brother in the Trojan War. So in Agamemnons eyes, the sacrifice of his daughter was an order sent by the Gods. When Clytemnestra killed Agamemnon, she also believed it was acceptable because he was the man that killed her own aughter and his own flesh in blood. The final situation was when Orestes killed his mother Clytemnestra in vengeance of his fathers murder. The main difference between all three murders where the reactions from the chorus and citizens of the kingdoms. When Iphigenia and Clytemnestra were killed the chorus was indifferent and almost happy with what happened but when Agamemnon was killed by Clytemnestra, the chorus was in shock that a woman would do such a thing. The hand (Aeschylus, Agamemnon, line 1571-1572) which is in contrast to when Orestes s told But youVe done well. Dont burden yourself with bad omens, lash yourself with guilt. YouVe set us free, the whole city of Argos (Aeschylus, The Libation Bearers, line 1044-1046). These murders were literally done in parallel situations but because Clytemnestra was a woman that killed a man, her offense was found to be a greater crime than Agamemnon and Orestes. In the third book of Oresteia, Orestes is brought to the court of Athena who is the patron of Athens, and tried in front of a Jury for the crime of murdering his mother. Apollo, the God that told Orestes to kill Clytemnestra, fought for Orestes while the Furies fght for Clytemnestra. The furies argued that Orestes killed his own flesh in blood and the woman that bore him. Unfortunately for Clytemnestra though Apollo brings up that Athena was never born by natural birth and never had a mother to raise her. He claims that children dont need mothers, that it is the fathers seed and thats all someone needs. Because of this when it came to a tie vote from the Jury, Athena sided with Apollo and his argument. This shows that even Athena, a woman f great power sees women as useless in a sense. Athena has been solidified to believe that the one thing women were thought to be useful for, in those ages, as not needed. She takes the mans side of things and agrees with Apollo, another man, instead of helping Clytemnestra. Apparently back then; even woman with a high amount of power will hide behind the decisions of powerful men instead of creating their own. Through the differences of Athena and Clytemnestra, the Juxtaposition between the murders of Iphigenia, Agamemnon and Clytemnestra and the decisions made in he Greek court, it is proven that there are significant gender roles and schemas throughout the play Oresteia. There is no question that woman where treated differently and expected to act to a certain way during this time. The play showed a double standard of the expected behaviors between a man and woman and demonstrated all the different ways these standards are ridiculed throughout the society. Of all the things the readers learn one of the biggest things is that it definitely shows the differences in gender roles have drastically changed sense this time.

However, its not quite as cut and dried as a question of gay versus straight. Instead, its a much more complex cultural perspective, in which the approval- or disapproval- of sexual activity was based upon the social status of the people performing various acts. Did You Know? Instead, they based their terminology upon the role that the participants played.Because Roman society was so patriarchal, those who took on a submissive role were seen as feminine, and thus looked down upon.Although there is little documentation of female same-sex relationships in Rome, scholars have discovered love spells and letters written from one woman to another. For men, the determination of masculinity was directly tied to how one displayed the Roman concept of virtus. This was one of several ideals that all freeborn Romans tried to follow. To take that a step further, the active role of imperialism and conquest found in ancient Rome was often discussed in terms of sexual metaphor. Because masculinity was predicated on ones ability to conquer, homosexual activity was viewed in terms of domination. A man taking on the perceived dominant, or penetrative, role would fall under far less public scrutiny than a man who was being penetrated, or submissive; to the Romans, the action of being conquered implied that a man was weak and willing to give up his liberty as a free citizen. In general, same-sex relationships among partners of the appropriate social status were considered normal and acceptable. Freeborn Roman men were permitted, and even expected, to be interested in sex with partners of both genders. Even once married, a Roman man might continue to maintain relationships with partners other than his spouse. However, it was understood that he was only to have sex with prostitutes, slaves, or people who were considered infamia. This was a lower social status assigned by the censors to individuals whose legal and social standing had been formally reduced or removed. This group also included entertainers such as gladiators and actors. An infamis could not provide testimony in legal proceedings, and could be subjected to the same sorts of corporal punishments usually reserved for slaves. Ancient history expert N.S. Gill points out that Instead of todays gender orientation, ancient Roman... sexuality can be dichotomized as passive and active. The socially preferred behavior of a male was active; the passive part aligned with the female. While a free Roman man was permitted to have sex with slaves, prostitutes, and infames, it was only acceptable if he took the dominant, or penetrative role. He was not allowed to have sex with other freeborn Roman men, or the wives or children of other free men. In addition, he couldnt have sex with another mans slave; this is because slaves were property, and sex with someone elses slave required the owners explicit permission. Although not extensively documented, there were homosexual romantic relationships between Roman men. Most scholars agree that same sex relationships between men of the same class existed; however, because there were so many rigid social constructs applied to such relationship, they were kept private. While same-sex marriage was not legally permitted, there are writings that indicate some men did participate in public marriage ceremonies with other men; the emperor Nero did this at least twice, as did the emperor  Elagabalus. In addition, at one point during his ongoing dispute with Mark Antony, Cicero attempted to discredit his opponent by claiming Antony had been given a stola by another man; the stola was the traditional garment worn by married women. It’s Time to Revise Title IX The Preamble to Title IX, which was instigated in 1972, states that â€Å"No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subject to discrimination under any educational programs or activity receiving federal financial assistance.† This law took action to give females equal opportunities in federally funded programs. Although Title IX’s sole purpose was well intended, it fell short of its main goals because it had negative affects on male activities. In the article â€Å"Title IX: It’s Time to Live Up to the Letter of the Law,† Donna Lopiano argued for equal opportunities in athletics for women. She discussed how Title IX has affected men’s athletics through the Proportionality Law which insists that all schools provide an equal ratio of financial assistance to male and female students. Lopiano’s article contested the amount of athletic scholarship money offered to male and female athletes, and the budget each team received. A topic that Lopiano chose to ignore in her article was that by colleges cutting men’s sports teams to comply with Title IX, they were working against the law that they were trying to fulfill. Lopiano also ignored the fact that females do not have identical interests to males. Although females show a large interest in athletics, there is a greater demand for male athletics. A marriage is full of moral ethics that should be followed. Kant would have agreed with me that we have moral duties to ones self and others. A marriage is committing moral thoughts, words, and actions to yourself and your spouse. Kant believed in treating other people the way you wish they would treat you. Never treat other people as if they were merely things. The formula of humanity states that we should treat people as an end and never as a means to an end. In committing adultery, the marriage and the spouse are being used as a means. Marriage should be treated with dignity and not as a thing that can be played with. I hope no one would apply the universal law of categorical imperative to committing adultery. I could not imagine applying the act of committing adultery to how all others should act. If we did apply the universal law to committing adultery then marriage would be worthless. Basically, do not choose a rule for yourself that you wouldn’t want everyone else to obey. Kant believes that the only good thing is a good will. Good will equals good intentions. Committing adultery is not a morally good act and Kant would agree with me. Utilitarianism is an action that is right if it maximizes the overall happiness of all people. In other words, an action is morally right if the consequences of that action are more favorable than unfavorable to everyone. This is consequentialism. Utilitarianism has rule utilitarianism and act utilitarianism. In rule utilitarianism, a behavioral code or rule is morally right if the consequences of the rule are more favorable than unfavorable to everyone. I believe it is more favorable to your spouse not to cheat than to cheat. I would be also more favorable to you not to cheat so the spouse doesn’t get upset. Act utilitarianism weighs the consequences of each particular action. There is a list of consequences of the act of committing adultery and none of them are good. There are moral rules against committing adultery and one of them is lying. In taking the vows in front of God is a form of a promise and breaking that promise is lying to God. John Stuart Mill is a hedonistic utilitarian. Our actions are meant to give happiness not only to ourselves but to others as well. Mill made the distinction of happiness between pleasures of the mental sort as a higher form than that of bodily pleasures. Mill states, it is better to be intelligently dissatisfied then foolishly satisfied. The ultimate pain and misery caused by committing adultery is not worth the short term pleasure that it produces. Wikipedia. org states that Utilitarianism of John Stuart Mill is classified as a type of hedonism, as it judges the morality of the actions by their consequent contributions to the greater good and happiness of all. Mills believes that there can be different levels of pleasure as long as the act promotes an action which makes everyone happy. Mills would say that committing adultery doesn’t bring overall happiness. Hedonism is described as pleasure is the highest good and whatever causes pleasure is right. On this note, hedonism would say committing adultery would be right if it is giving the cheating spouse pleasure. Committing adultery is motivated by desire and it can reduce pain by not telling the spouse that you are cheating. Most of the time committing adultery is motivated by sexual desire. My view on committing adultery is closest with Kantianism. Good will equals good intentions. They way I treat my spouse is the way I would want to be treated. I value marriage and I hope my spouse does too.
